This project is an ongoing collaboration between BRT and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for the development and validation of the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP)–– Virginia’s statewide accountability alternate assessments based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAAS) in Reading, Math, and Science. The assessment program is designed to measure the academic knowledge and skills of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities, including through the identification and use of universal and individualized accommodations in settings, administration, and response.
The VAAP project is directed by Dr. Shawn Irvin with key support from Joe Swinehart, Dr. Joseph F. T. Nese, and members of the Oregon Extended Assessment team. BRT’s work with VDOE leverages quantitative and qualitative approaches, innovative technologies, and practitioner-supported development cycles to improve accessibility and academic outcomes for students experiencing the most significant disabilities.
